Naturopathy is one of the most popular forms of complementary medicine in Australia today. Naturopaths perform over 4.9 million consultations in Australia every year. It emphasises holistic disease prevention through natural, therapeutic methods. It’s based on the principle that the body has an intrinsic ability to heal itself, with the body, mind, and emotions supported during the healing process.
Patients who undergo naturopathic treatments are treated as individuals, and treatment involves the entire body, not just the area of their body that is affected. The focus is also on the cause of health issues, not just the symptoms.
The six foundation principles that naturopaths practise are:
In Australia, Naturopaths are non-registered Allied Health professionals that are bound by a national code of conduct. Unfortunately, this lack of registration means you need to check that someone who is calling themselves a Naturopath has indeed studied the Bachelor of Health Science degree (or permitted equivalent), has appropriate registrations, professional memberships and insurance relating to the practice of Naturopathy. Part of maintaining professional registration as an Australian Naturopath is the completion of CPE each year (Continuing Professional Education) and maintaining First Aid and CPR certification.
The professional associations in Australia that have the highest standards to register Naturopaths are:
- ATMS (Australian Traditional Medicine Society)
- ANTA (Australian Natural Therapists Association)
- ANPA (Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association)
- NHAA (naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia)
- CMA (Complementary Medicine Association)
I am registered with ATMS (Provider number: 26520).
I studied the 4-year Bachelor of Applied Science(Naturopathy) at Southern School of Natural Therapies (Fitzroy, Melbourne) gaining my certification in 2011. I have also attained further certificates in:
Naturopaths like myself, will typically work alongside your doctor or other health professionals to offer the best possible patient-centred care. We use non-invasive and natural treatments that work in harmony with the body’s own healing mechanisms and that complement medical management of illness and diseases. There is a big focus on disease prevention and the influence of the environment, lifestyle, and emotions on your holistic health.
The naturopathic techniques undertaken to treat clients can differ depending on the modalities each Naturopath has studied, as well as their healing philosophy. All Naturopaths will typically start by asking you questions about your lifestyle, diet, stress, bowel habits, energy levels, sleep quality, environment, family background, and any history of illness. An in-depth focus on the details of signs and symptoms related to your presenting complaint is gathered to form a differential diagnosis. After compiling a detailed health history, we may then also use other techniques, to assess you. For me these may include:
I will then design a Naturopathic treatment plan to support your body’s ability to heal itself to best of it's abilities. Treatment options, what your treatment journey will look like, and what treatments and supplements will be required will also be discussed. I may then use a range of non-invasive techniques to treat you, including:
